Potato Eaters by Vincent Van Gogh

The Potato Eaters, completed in 1885, is considered by many to be Van Gogh's first work of art. At the time of its creation, Van Gogh had only recently started painting and had not yet mastered the techniques that would later make him famous. The painting that was completed consisted of 5 figures sitting around a square table eating potatoes; four of them are females and one male. Although the piece is laced in darkness, the mixed emotions residing in the faces of the occupants shine out brightly. These figures are so intense that one can nearly hear the conversations being spoken around the table. Perhaps this vibrancy layered with the darkness is what draws one closer to examine the smaller details of the painting.

These details include but are not limited to:

  • The rafter boards in the back of the piece.
  • The soft gentle lines forming a window in the darkness.
  • The picture frame hung on a darkened wall.
  • The large platter of potatoes and the boney fingers stretched out to obtain them.
  • The woman pouring a brew similar to coffee.
  • The large rectangular column behind the table seems to hold the building up.
  • The weathered edges of the table.

Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau (French for "new style") was popularizes by the famous Maison de l'Art Nouveau (House of new art), a Paris art gallery operated by Siegfried Bing. Art Nouveau represents the beginning of modernism in design modern architecture. It occurred at  time when mass-produced consumer goods began to fill the marketplace and designers, architects and artists began to understand that the handcrafted work of centuries past could be lost.

While reclaiming this craft tradition, art nouveau designers simultaneously rejected traditional styles in favour of new, organic forms that emphasized humanity's connection to nature. Art Nouveau and architecture flourished in major European cities between 1890 adn 1914.

It embraced all forms of art and design :
  • architecture
  • furniture
  • glassware
  • graphic design
  • jewelry
  • painting
  • pottery
  • metalwork
  • textile

Antoni Gaudi

  • His buildings are considered biomorphic or organically-shaped.
  • His famous architectures are : Casa Mila, Casa Battlo, La Sagrada Familia, Parque Guell.

Park Guell by Antoni Gaudi

The Parc Guell has multiple entrances. The most beautiful one certainly is the main access from the Carrer d'Olot. Typical of Gaudi are the two pavilions with cafe on both sides of the entrance. When we get to the staircase, there will be  surrounded with dragon. As well as the surrounding walls and the famous bench above the market hall that the dragon also decorated with spit ceramics.

The famous salamander or dragon in the center of the staircase is covered with small pieces of colorful ceramic kangaroo court with no problems adjusting to Gaudi's sinious forms themselves. This technique called "trencadis" is perhaps the latter of the architect, who uses one way or another in all his works.

Guell and Gaudi conceived this park, situated within a natural park. They imagined an organized grouping of high-quality homes, decked out with all the latest technological advancements to ensure maximum comfort, finished off with an artist touch.
